Lebau & Neuworth partner attorney Stephen Lebau was chosen by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) Baltimore, Maryland, field office to participate in a panel of three lawyers and to speak on the topic “The Future of Human Resources is Today.” Steve was the only employee-rights attorney to present.
This is the third year in a row that Steve has been given the honor of addressing the E.E.O.C. session.
The training, which took place on August 26, 2019, fell under the auspices of the E.E.O.C. Training Institute. Well over 200 were in attendance, primarily consisting of human resource and employee benefit professionals.
Steve spoke as an advocate for worker rights and the role of Human Resources in addressing the needs of all workers. He specifically expressed that H.R. outsourcing is a serious area of concern and potential liability for employers. Steve also noted that vendors big low to get a contract and warned human resource professionals that third-party call centers, third-party leave administrators and third-party time record systems, in his view, are most concerned with keeping their costs down and not necessarily serving an employer’s best interests.
He shared several “war stories” in which companies outsourced Family Medical Leave Act administration and paid a steep price for doing so. H.R. staying on top of reasonable accommodation innovations was also discussed as a priority. The Job Accommodation Network was identified as a great source of information.
